Why Course Factory exists
AI made course writing faster. It didn’t make course design easier.
Most AI course tools start with the easiest problem: generating more content. Most experts do not have a content problem. They already know far more than belongs in a course. The hard part is deciding what learners actually need to know, practice and demonstrate.
No amount of generated material decides what someone must be able to do, what they need to know first, where they need practice, what feedback they need, or what they must demonstrate before passing means anything.
What’s missing is the architecture underneath it. Course Factory teaches you that system, then helps you use AI to execute it faster.
The build

Get the expertise out of your head.
A structured interview protocol you run on yourself, with the prompts written for you. It surfaces the explanations, examples and judgment calls you stopped noticing you make.

Architect
Decide what the learner must be able to do.
Capabilities → KSATs → measurable objectives → sequence → practice → assessment. AI can help with every step. It shouldn't be the one making the final instructional decisions, and that judgment is the part nobody taught you.

Build
Turn the architecture into the actual course.
Lessons, worked examples, practice with real feedback, and assessments built so passing requires demonstrating the capability. Produced in CourseTemplates.ai as standards-enabled output.

Preflight
Try to break it before learners do.

What stage two produces
A capability map, worked through.
Invented for this page rather than taken from client work, and short enough to read in a minute. A real one covers every capability in the course. This covers one.
The capability
Decide whether an incident meets the threshold for formal reporting, and act on that decision inside the required window.
Shift supervisors, in their first ninety days. Instead of a vague objective like understand the reporting policy, the capability is framed around a decision the learner actually has to make.
What that requires
- Knows the threshold, the reporting window, and the difference between a near miss and an incident
- Can apply the threshold to a case that does not obviously sit on one side of it
- Can do it at the end of a shift, under time pressure, without the handbook
- Produces a filed report, or a recorded decision not to file, with the reason
Objectives
- Given a described incident, classify it as reportable, not reportable, or escalate.
- Given a borderline case, name the criterion that decides it.
- File inside the window, with the required fields complete.
Where it gets hard
No injury but high potential severity. A contractor rather than an employee. Found after the window has closed. These are the cases the course exists for, and they are easy to miss when the design starts with content instead of capability.
Practice and assessment
Three scenarios, at least one borderline, with feedback that names the deciding criterion rather than saying correct or incorrect. Assessment asks for a judgment on an incident the learner has not seen, not for the wording of the threshold.
What got cut
The history of the reporting requirement. The safety committee’s reporting line. Both were in the expert’s first outline, and neither serves an objective, so neither is in the course. If content does not support an objective, it does not automatically belong in the course.

Who built this
Built by people who know both sides of the course.
Instructional design on one side, learning technology on the other. That second half matters here, because this program promises standards-enabled output, SCORM 1.2/2004 and xAPI, and someone has to be accountable for that claim.
Actyra’s founder, Brian Caudill, was in the working groups when SCORM was being written and holds one of only nine SCORM auditor certifications in the world. He built and sold JCA Solutions to Rustici Software, and has spent twenty-plus years across SCORM, xAPI, AICC and cmi5 building and repairing content systems.
That means the standards-enabled part of Course Factory isn’t a marketing claim. It is backed by more than twenty years of work inside the standards and systems your finished course has to run on.
Frequently asked questions.
How much time does this actually take?
Course one takes as long as it takes. Most people are working around a job. The material doesn’t expire and neither does your access, so the constraint is your calendar rather than ours. Course two takes a fraction of it, because you are no longer inventing the process, only the content.
I already have a course. Is this the right thing?
Probably not. If the course exists and you want to know whether it holds up, that’s Learning Preflight™, testing only, $1,500 per course. Come here when you’re building something new, or rebuilding from the ground up.
What if my course fails Preflight?
Most first drafts do, usually on practice adequacy or assessment alignment. That is what the remediation pass and retest are for, and both are included. A course that clears on the first attempt is rare enough that we would want to look at the assessment again.
Do I talk to a human?
In the community, yes, post your capability map, your objectives or your assessment items and they get looked at. The extraction step is self-run with the prompts written for you rather than a booked call, which is what keeps this at $2,500 rather than agency rates.
